Mastering the Art of Note-Taking: A Comprehensive Guide for Students in Singapore

STEP-BY-STEP GUIDE TO EFFECTIVE NOTE-TAKING METHODS FOR STUDENTS

Your notebook should be your Bible the night before the exams. It should have everything you need to skim through all the important topics and concepts. But for that, you will actually have to make some efforts throughout the year to make good notes! Here are some tips which will help you to make great notes right from Day 1 to improve your GPA:
  1.  Don’t forget to take running notes during lectures. This will help you to understand complex topics later on when you will need to study! Professors use simple language as well as real-world examples to explain concepts. Jotting them down will make your work a whole lot easier!
  2. Instead of typing away on a laptop, use the good old pen and paper because that helps you to retain information better.
  3. Know how to distinguish the important stuff from the fluff. If the professor starts the sentence with a “There are five vital types…” or “The Greek philosopher Aristotle said that…” or “photosynthesis is defined as the…” then you should know that it’s time to start writing! Look out for verbal signposts which revolve around types of something, definitions, or pros and cons of using something.
  4. Write down in bullet points and write down important dates, keywords, and names on the left side of the margin again. If you are a slow writer, then consider recording classes and then making notes of them at home.
  5. When you get back home, review your running notes. Reorder the information in a way that makes sense to you in another notebook. Along with that, frame questions for each topic and go through the chapters which were taught. Mark out the important paragraphs. Now add these sections to your running notes materials. Voila! Structured answers for examinations are ready! If this will take up too much of your time, then simply pen down the page number of the important sections next to your running notes.
  6. Highlight important words and key concepts. Visual diagrams will also help you to remember better. Also, do not underestimate the use of good abbreviations, signs and short forms! For instance, use ‘e.g’ instead of ‘for example,’ a ‘X’ for ‘no’ and so on.

You can also use these note-taking techniques while going through YouTube videos or online courses to enhance your knowledge. Instead of simply listening or watching, physically writing down important points will help you immensely in the retention process!
